I still consider it the truest form of rap. No one knew what the hell we were listening to and we loved it. The first song that did it for me was Ain't No Thang. There is a place for that, but Rap, to me, at the core, is about lyricism and attitude. When I hear some sing songy BS, or some crap made just for dancing at the club, I am turned off. I don't mean to be, but I take lyrics very seriously. I still consider myself a bit of a rap snob. After a little while we looked at each other like "Yo, what is this?" We backed up a few tracks and were blown the fuck away.
We smoked a ton of weed and played a ton of Madden (on Genesis. It was in the background while we were doing whatever.
We finally popped Southernplayalistik in the stereo and let it play. The CDs came and of course we rocked Ready to Die, Tical, and even My Life (by Mary J.) hard. "Southernplaya-what? This is gonna be some bullshit." We get a bunch of CDs we love, but needed a few reaches in order to make the 11 we'd get for a penny. My roommate decides to order some CDs through Columbia House. Sure we had love for Dre and Snoop, and NWA before that, but there was so much good NYC rap coming out at the time that you could keep yourself pretty busy just keeping up with the NYC scene. We both love Hip Hop, but (like many New Yorkers at the time) didn't really show much love to anything beyond the five boroughs. OK, I know I'm not breaking any new ground saying that this album started the careers of one of the most important, talented, original groups in the history of Hip Hop, but I thought I'd share a little story about how this album simply blew my fucking mind.įall 1994.
